"Tin Soldier" was inspired by a SF story by Joan D. Vinge, based on the tale
"Den standhaftige Tinsoldat"( Dansk /
English ) by the Danish author
Hans Christian Andersen (1807-1875).
He wrote a lot of great tales in the pre-"There-has-to-be-a-happy-end" era; "The Emperor's New Suit" and "
The Little Mermaid" are probably the most famous ones (the latter one crippled by Disney to end happily as "Ariel").
I enjoyed reading them when I was a little boy, maybe this has caused my love to
Joan D. Vinge's stories, which - like "Tin Soldier" do even have a kind of happy end, but are far beyond everything Hollywood
brings to our screens.
Please excuse the minor quality of the image - it's a bad scan of a bad photo of the image, which I (like most of my early paintings) don't own anymore.
